What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a funding model that raises money through small donations from a large number of people, inverting traditional approaches to business financing. Made possible largely through the internet and social media, crowdfunding enables businesses to pitch to and raise money from an extremely wide investor pool. It can be extremely effective: to date, the largest crowdfunded product in traditional currency is Cloud Imperium's video game Star Citizen, whose ongoing crowdfunding campaign has to date raised $350m, and rising.
