After the success of our “Crowdfunding: Hype or Hit?” event, we used our own platform to raise £1.2 million. The round closed in only 33 hours.
Goncalo De Vasconcelos was working with Cambridge-based Business Angels when equity crowdfunding erupted, but he immediately saw a problem: valuations were being dictated by companies at the expense of inexperienced online investors. He envisioned a new platform which put investors’ interests first by letting online users ‘piggy-back’ on the experience of business angels and invest in the same class of share and at the same price per share as the lead investor, and that vision became SyndicateRoom. Through experience, Goncalo brought angel investments to the crowd, giving SyndicateRoom members the opportunity to invest with the Angels.
Where are we now?
Since our first deal went live in 2013, we’ve quickly become one of the ‘Big Three’ in the equity crowdfunding market, making ours the fastest growing platform. In this time we’ve already facilitated both the first equity crowdfunded IPO and the first equity crowdfunded Hollywood film: ‘Salty’ by Simon West. We’ve also enabled ISA investments for the first time in our industry.
To date, 80% of companies listing on our platform raise the funds they need, and you can view their trading status here. The money raised through our own round will help us to continue expanding - an endeavour already underway with the launch of our Investors’ Academy, which arms online investors with the know-how needed to make educated investment decisions, regardless of which platform they use.
